Welcome to my website,
Classical piano music offers me the possibility to express my feelings, thoughts about life and much more. That's why this hobby has grown out to my profession rather early. During my concerts, I attempt to let the listeners hear what makes the music so exciting, relaxing or whichever function is can have. A concert is not a lecture. But unfortunately, nowadays practically every musician is convinced that he/she "knows everything" about the repertoire they play. More than 95% of all modern classical artists has a very academic approach towards music in general. I simultaneously answer the question, why nobody is really interested in this form of art anymore. The answer is: classical music is not music anymore. My goal is to show that it's not an irreversible process. In my career, I will attempt to show that my form of art, after all these centuries, is still alive, and does not belong into the "academic musical museum" of the boring professors. To clarify - it's not solely disrespect for them, I only say that my vision differs from those of the honored ladies and gentlemen of all conservatories in the world. Ironic it is, since realizing that to learn "how to play", one must apply for a conservatory education, but when one decides to "really make music", it's the last place to go. Music is my life? Not quite. It's only only form of arts in which I can fully express myself. But otherwise, there are many other interesting things to do in life. Only the mentally disturbed among us, the very selfopinionated, can say that they've invested their whole lives to give you piano performances. Those are also the ones who participate at music competitions and play with "no errors". Perfection? No. Being perfect is, at the same time, imperfection in its full glory! Technical perfection does damage to the musicality of an artist, as well as the personality (that he/she hopefully tries to lay into the music). Here we're whitnessing the so-called "anonymous pianists". They know everything, and nothing. And me? I know nothing at all, I haven't even shaked hands with the composers! But I know damn well that the way I play the music, is my way, and nothing else. With the respect for the composers. Parallel question goes: Freedom in classical music? More than anything! Improsation lives in its fullest. The music that the greats of the past have written knows no boundaries and offers millions of ways to express oneself. I will do my best to show you most of my activities. My website will frequently be renewed with various materials. Have fun surfing through all the sections of my site and I hope to see you in reality! Serg van Gennip, October 8, 2007 | |||||||||||||||||
